New Medical Storage Project? 6 Steps To Getting Started

Posted on December 22, 2009 by Dr. StorBetter

Our carts and cabinets offer exceptional quality, durability and are customized to optimize your workplace efficiency. As space in any hospital or medical facility is critical, we have put together some essential steps to help get you started.

Typical Wall Storage Design Diagram

1. What is the available space for storage?

  • If your carts are to be used instead of a cabinet, what door ways will they need to pass through?
  • How high is the ceiling height?
  • Are there fire or ventilation code requirements (May need 18″ – 24″ of ceiling clearance)
  • What is the access to storage space? (door ways – height and width)

2. Do I need Mobile storage (carts) or Stationary (cabinets), or both?

3. Would I want to consider slopped or flat tops?

  • Slopped tops reduce dust
  • Flat tops fit easily under soffit.

4. What door options should I consider for cabinets or carts:

  • Do I need any type of a door at all? No door saves cost.
  • Should I consider hinged glass so I can see my supplies?
  • Do I need a Tambour door that rolls up and down to save on space or provide access in smaller spaces?

5. What do I think is the optional way to accessing my material?

  • Should I use a shelf?
  • If I chose a shelf, should I use with vertical dividers to better support my supplies?
  • How about considering baskets in various sizes? (labels are available)
  • Trays, which can be subdivided, could hold many supplies?
  • Do I need a Catheter manager? 7 or 5 hooks are available which pull out and rotate for better access and visibility management.
  • Would hooks be efficient for my supplies?
  • Should I use bin modules for small medical supplies?

6. What is my most effective positioning of product in each cabinet/cart for your work flow?
